Solid Waste Recycling Facility Processes
Solid waste originating from homes and industrial facilities is collected by municipalities. The collected waste is sorted into categories such as organic (biodegradable),hazardous, recyclable waste (packaging, etc.) at mechanical separation facilities. The recycling of biodegradable waste is achieved by creating compost. Furthermore, methane gas produced from biodegradable waste (landfill gas) is burned to generate electricity, thus achieving recycling.
Separated packaging wastes are compacted and sent to Packaging Waste Recycling facilities for recycling. Hazardous wastes, on the other hand, are sent to licensed firms by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning for disposal.
What is a Solid Waste Regulated Landfill Facility?
Organic and domestic solid wastes generated in homes and industrial facilities, other than recyclable waste, are stored in Solid Waste Regulated Landfill Facilities. Electricity is generated from the landfill gas (biogas) produced, and compost (fertilizer) is produced from biodegradable waste to dispose of the waste. Integrated facilities where all these processes are carried out are called Solid Waste Regulated Landfill Facilities.
Solid Waste Regulated Landfill Facility Approval Certificate
The area (lot) where the regulated landfill process for solid waste will be conducted is identified. The amount and characterization of waste that will come to the identified area are determined based on the region's population. A feasibility report including the characteristics of the area where the landfill will be conducted and waste projection is prepared. After the feasibility report, a construction project is prepared. Following the approval of the project, inspection reports are prepared for the construction of the lot area by construction supervision companies. A Solid Waste Regulated Landfill Facility Approval Certificate is issued for the facility that is found suitable based on the inspection reports.
Solid Waste Regulated Landfill Facility Regulation
The Regulation on the Regulated Landfill of Waste, which is in effect with the Official Gazette dated 26.03.2010 and numbered 27533, has been prepared to minimize the adverse effects of potential leachate waters and landfill gases on soil, air, groundwater, and surface waters, to prevent environmental pollution, to make appropriate landfill base technical designs according to the type of waste and to construct regulated landfill facilities, to manage the operation and closure of regulated landfill facilities, as well as the post-closure control and maintenance processes, to prevent potential adversities that may pose risks to the environment and human health, including the greenhouse effect, in the operation, closure, and post-closure maintenance processes, and to determine the technical and administrative matters related to the rehabilitation, closure, and post-closure maintenance processes of the existing regulated landfill facilities and the general rules to be complied with.
